Child Development Khazana (CDK)

The Children Development Khazana envisages a lifeline to poor, marginalized children and adolescents, where they get opportunities to save and withdraw money and where the adolescents can take advance for their economic empowerment and personal development. The project started in 2008 is gaining tremendous popularity among the rag-picking, street and working children of northeast district of Delhi. The rationale for the establishment of CDK is to make the children economically empowered. The uniqueness of the project is that it is the children's own Khazana, managed by them and for them and the role of the associated adults participating is that of a facilitator. The membership has increased from 98 children in 2009 to 538 children in March 2010.

More and more children are becoming aware about Khazana through various efforts towards membership drive. The community based awareness programmes are conducted from time to time to sensitize the parents and community people about the initiative by Children Development Khazana and itsbenefits to children. The CDK is developing good habits of saving money as well as spending it usefully and at the time of crisis. The activities are organized for the better understanding of CDK functions and its timely resolution of the problems. Workshops were also conducted to strengthen their livelihood. Regular life skill training programmes are organised in order to equip the members for better management of CDK on their own. The project is supported by Butterflies, Delhi.
