INTRODUCTION:
The present era of busy schedule of urban populace has created a unique problem of depression, anxiety and uneasiness. Every body is running after the unfulfilled ambitions and desires to achieve every thing without realizing the consequences and adversity of their action. Their action has increased beyond their physical capacity resulting in destruction of both physical and mental health. Their unfulfilled needs, which are most often their dreams and thoughts, lead them to pessimistic behaviour and they find themselves in loneliness and dejected. People especially adolescent are imitating the lifestyle of successful persons of society without understanding their own capability. As a result when they fail to achieve the desired result they go deep into frustration, anxiety, depression, confusion, complexity, stressful life and loss of confidence. Anxiety disorder are most common mental, emotional and behavioural problem to occur during childhood and adolescents. While girls are affected more than boys, about 13 of every 100 children and adolescent aged 9-17 years. In the modern age we are living with increasing stress. The changing economic world order with the impact of globalization, missing family values, peer pressure, professional tension are resulting in tremendous mental stress over a period of time. In India it has been found that 4 to 8% of children living in difficult situation suffer from some or other forms of mental health problems. Therefore, various difficult life factors can be a potential threat to their overall development and adequate adjustment to their environment. The following data reveals the present status of people who need psycho-social care in India:
  • 2 crore people suffer from serious mental disorder.
  • 5 crore from common mental disorder.
  • 30-35 lakh in need of hospitalization
  • 29 thousand beds available for such patients

  • Changing economic scenario
  • Career related stress
  • Peer pressure
  • Professional problems
  • Family problem
Health is a valuable asset for every individual. Physical health is incomplete without mental health, because mental is related to minds, happiness, satisfaction and peace. Mental health is a term use to describe either a level of cognitive or emotional well being.

Our main focus of concern is for children as a mentally healthy child develops into a balanced and responsible citizen with positive attitude and behavior. Guidance & counseling department is working as a lifeline for the community as it provides them with platform to vent out their emotions, clarify their issues; gain insight into their feelings and thoughts and deal effectively with problems. Guidance & Counseling Department is providing psychosomatic care and support to children, adolescents and adults on regular and continuous basis to deal with their psychosocial problems effectively.

OBJECTIVE OF THE PSYCHOSOCIAL CARE:
The main objective of programme is to understand and assess mental health needs of the people and to promote psychosocial competence in them.

THE MAIN TARGET GROUP:
The main target groups of this programme are the beneficiaries of ADF projects. These include:
  • Children involved in rag picking, Physically/Mentally Challenged Children, Children in high risk and School children
  • Adolescent Girls & Boys
  • Family of the Community, who are suffering from mental & physical problem.
MAJOR ACTIVITIES:
Under the special programme for children numerous activities are conducted to ensure their overall wellbeing. Different qualitative ways are adapted to assess their status; proper interventions to overcome their limitations and polish their strengths and provision of services for individual, group and family counseling.
  • Drug de-addiction programme under guidance & counseling department ensures that the children and adolescents from Rag-picking community are well aware of the evils of drugs and adopt a better and healthy lifestyle. They are even provided with individual and group counseling to intrinsically motivate them to stay away from any kind of drug addiction. Severe cases are referred to Drug De-addiction centers for medical assistance.
  • Educational assessment programme organized to assess the levels of academic functioning of school-going children of Rag-picking community. Under this, child's level of motivation to study; his/her reading-writing skills; weak subject areas and any other issues leading to scholastic problems are assessed and accordingly intervention is planned. It is conducted on regular basis to see the level of improvements.
  • Recently initiated Anger Management programme works for adolescents who are identified to be high on aggression. Regular sessions are held with the target group; aiming at gradual modification in their ways of experiencing and expressing anger. Based on their issues and conflicting experiences, application of various techniques to manage their anger outburst is taught. Personal counseling is provided in extreme cases to deal with deeper causes of aggression and help them in resolving their inner conflicts.
  • Yoga and Pranayam is one of the major part of this programme as it ensures physical and mental wellbeing for all; therefore its' regular sessions with children of Asha Niketan; Special sessions for children of Rag-picking community are conducted to teach them various 'asanas' and breathing exercises and to motivate them to bring this in their daily practice, by explaining to them its benefits and positive effects on mind, body and soul.
  • Life skills trainings for the children of all age groups are conducted from time to time to inculcate in them qualities like decision making; problem solving; listening & communicating skills; responsibility; positive attitude; personal hygiene; study habits; mannerisms etc.. These trainings have made a noticeable impact on their personality and their approach towards life.
  • Counselling is the most important part of stress control. Services such as group counselling, individual counselling, family counselling and telephonic counselling are provided to persons having stress problem. We can save many lives with changing thoughts, expression and actions through counselling.
SPECIFIC OUTCOME:
The psycho-social care provides following relief to the person or children who are going through the problem:
  • Supportive relationship between community and family will be developed.
  • Responsible and adaptive behaviour will be developed.
  • Self respect will be improved.
  • Creative solution to the problem will be identified.
  • Expression of feelings will be developed
  • Coping skill with stressful social situation will be developed.
FUTURE PLAN:
Three guidance and counseling centers have been opened in Seemapuri area for rag-picking community in order to provide community people easy access to our services. Also generating awareness about mental health is one of our motives along with helping them to resolve their issues by developing better perspective and positive attitude to look at situations and to deal with their problems.
